Garnet
Ask anyone to name gemstones known for being red, and you’re likely to hear the same answer: ruby and garnet. This is for good reason, since both of these gems are rightfully celebrated for their bold, blazing hues of fire and heat. And because they share this same striking color, they’re often mistaken for each other, but geologists know they’re actually quite different at heart. Garnet, for one thing, is not a single stone at all, but rather an entire family of minerals. And in its natural, unpolished state it doesn’t even look particularly red, but rather more of a dullish brown. But what really sets this family further apart from other minerals is the unusual orderliness of their cubic crystal systems. This orderliness gives garnet an almost unbreakable quality: It’s said that garnet will shatter, but it won’t split. It also gives garnet exceptional longevity. So, if ruby symbolizes red hot passions run amok, garnet symbolizes that same fervor and fire, but harnessed, sustained, and held together by structure and order. Garnet is here to ask: What might you accomplish, and how far might you go, if you added some order and structure to your own passions?
The Bottom Line

“Bring structure to your passion and fire.”
