Can a rock have good vibrations? Agate sure seems to. Known for its soothing, undulating bands of contrasting color, a polished piece of this mineral might put you in mind of lava lamps, rippled water, groovy music, or tie-dye T-shirts. Then, to make it even more far out, its bands are often dyed into near-technicolor shades of anything from yellows, oranges, and reds to purples, pinks, and blues. But as wild as these mesmerizing patterns are now, it all began with emptiness. Agate forms when a cavity or void is repeatedly filled, emptied, then refilled with silica-rich water. Each time the waters recede, a fresh layer of silica is deposited, which crystallizes over millions of years into the psychedelic patterns you can hold in your hand today. If you’ve been craving more mellow in your life, do as agate does: Start with an empty mind, then focus on a gently repeating pattern like a mantra, a chant, or simply your own breath. If that’s not your style, just zone out to your favorite music instead. If you stick to this practice long-term, you may end up with enough peace for even the grooviest hippies.

The Bottom Line

FEELING GROOVY
“Mellow out with music and meditation.”

One Or More Of These Messages Are For You

    • If your mind is in need of soothing, try meditation.
    • Mantras, mindfulness, and rhythmic breathing are all great ways to meditate, so if one doesn’t work for you, try another.
    • If you already meditate, this is a sign to keep going with it.
    • If meditation isn’t your thing, try music instead.
    • It’s easy to forget how much music means to us when we’ve gotten out of the habit. If you don’t already listen to music daily, find a way to fit some in today.
    • Playing or listening to music may end up playing a large role in your life.
    • You may benefit by putting more routines in your life.
    • If your life has been feeling empty of late, have faith: You’ll feel fulfilled again, you just need to give it time.
    • Never fear a void: Wonderful things can happen when we open up space for them.
