Aquamarine
The word aquamarine may mean “sea water,” but this is one gem you won’t find while scuba diving in the ocean. That’s because this greenish-blue or bluish-green gem only looks like a chunk of solidified sea. A color variety of the mineral beryl (whose other colors include green emerald and pink morganite), it’s actually found almost exclusively in pegmatite rock. Nevertheless, this is a gem that has long been connected to the ocean. In ancient Greece, it was associated with Poseidon, god of the sea, while ancient Romans believed it to be favored by their own sea god, Neptune. Sailors the world over have carried aquamarine as a good luck talisman to ensure calm seas and peaceful journeys. Some even swear this mineral was gifted to us by mermaids and has the power to call them to us in times of need. If aquamarine is showing up for you now, take it as your own reassurance that no matter how choppy and rough the waters of your life might get, you’ll always be guided safely through.
