Basalt

We all know people who can be counted on to show up and work quietly and consistently, day after day, uncomplainingly holding their family, friends, workplace, or community together. These people never ask to be noticed and even get embarrassed by recognition. They toil with so little fanfare, it’s easy to overlook their contributions, but without them, we fall apart. One might even say they are the “basalt” of the Earth. Basalt is the most common rock on our planet and underlies more of the Earth’s surface than any other kind of rock. It is literally the bedrock of our oceans, but because we can’t see most of it, it goes largely unnoticed. When it does emerge from out of the depths, it can form spectacular islands like the Hawaiian Islands (along with their most active volcano, Kilauea). But aside from impressive exceptions like these, basalt’s presence is taken for granted. If basalt is showing up for you now, it wants you to trust that you too are being safely supported right now, even if you can’t see it for yourself.
