Elbaite (Tourmaline)
If it were possible to turn a rainbow into rock, this mineral family might be the result. Tourmaline comes in a wider spectrum of colors than any other, with some color combinations so unique you won’t find them in any other mineral on Earth. Elbaite is the best known of this family, and some green elbaite is so vibrant it’s mistaken for emerald. Another type is green on the outside and bright pink in the middle, making it look very much like watermelon. Although tourmaline is too common and inexpensive to ever become a status symbol, this diversity of eye-catching colors has made it a longtime favorite among collectors. If tourmaline is tugging at you now, it might be asking you to make sure you’ve got enough color and diversity in your life. Especially if you’ve been feeling down or stuck lately, a fresh variety of colorful people, experiences, and points of view could be just the thing you need to liven things up.
The Bottom Line
