Jade

Jadeite and nephrite are two minerals so similar in appearance that for most of human history they were considered the same thing. We know better now but still commonly refer to them by the same name: jade. Though they do share much in common, they’re different chemically and structurally. Although both can be gorgeously green, only jadeite can be translucent or come in the shade known as “imperial green,” which, coupled with being rarer, makes it the more expensive of the two. But nephrite has the distinction of being tougher. It’s as unbreakable as steel and was used in ancient times to make axe heads, so some consider it the toughest mineral on Earth. This incredible strength, paired with its vibrant green color, has made jade one of our most revered stones. In ancient China, it was considered to be the embodiment of life energy itself. To this day, many around the world still consider jade an unusually powerful stone.
