Labradorite
What do soap bubbles, butterfly wings, and hummingbird feathers have in common? They’re all iridescent, just like this mineral, which shines and shimmers with gorgeous, ever-shifting rainbows of reflected light. This is caused by different light waves bouncing around and interfering with each other, making them combine in delightful ways that change the color patterns. Basically, if light could be said to play, this is what it would look like. But what makes this effect even more striking is that labradorite can look outright grim in the shadows, like a looming hunk of solidified darkness. But, like that friend with the deadpan humor who seems somber at first, then unexpectedly cracks you up, when this mineral comes to life, it can look like the light spectrum itself is laughing.
