Most people who buy onyx assume it must be solid black. Its very name is synonymous with the color, and it’s hard to find it being sold any other way. But real rockhounds know that onyx is not a solid black at all, but rather made up of alternating bands of color, usually black and white. While it’s technically possible to find a specimen taken entirely from a black band, such pieces are rare, which is why most of the black onyx on the market today is dyed or heat treated. But why is it be that we prefer an all-black rock, anyway? It’s a head scratcher, especially when onyx’s natural banding is so striking and unique. If this mineral is showing up for you now, it might be asking you a version of the same question. Are you favoring black over white, dark over light, or drama over laughter and ease? Do you sometimes make things bleaker and blacker than they need to be? If so, wouldn’t you rather expand to embrace the full range of experiences that makes up any beautiful life?

The Bottom Line

DRAMA
“Are you being a little bit dramatic?”

One Or More Of These Messages Are For You

  • If you step back and look at the full truth, you’ll realize that things are very rarely all good or all bad.
  • You may be suffering from black-and-white thinking, a pattern of thought that makes you see the world only in all-or-nothing extremes. If so, you’ll benefit from learning to see the more nuanced and balanced truth.
  • Don’t be taken in by the belief that people who struggle and suffer are somehow deeper or more interesting than those who are happy and content. People don’t always grow from pain, and happy people can be just as wise and deep as anyone.
  • It’s totally okay to wear all black, watch horror movies, and contemplate death. Just don’t get so sucked in that it distorts your view of reality.
  • If you only like things that are light and bright and positive, stop to make sure you’re not artificially cutting yourself off from the full range of human emotions and experience.
  • If you get the chance soon to see a theatre production or other dramatic performance, take it!
