Onyx
Most people who buy beads and baubles of onyx think of it as being solid black. In fact, its very name has come to be synonymous with the color. But real rockhounds know that onyx is not a solid color at all, but rather made up of alternating bands of color, usually black and white. While it’s technically possible to find a specimen taken entirely from a black band, such pieces are rare. Most of the black onyx on the market today is faked, having been dyed or heat treated. But why should it be that we prefer an all-black rock, anyway? It’s a head scratcher, especially when onyx’s natural banding is so striking and unique. If this mineral is showing up for you now, it might be asking you a version of the same question. Are you favoring black over white, dark over light, or drama over laughter and ease? Do you sometimes make things bleaker and blacker than they need to be? If so, wouldn’t you rather expand to embrace the full grayscale that makes up any beautiful life?
