Selenite and Satin Spar
If you grew up searching for portals to magical realms, you can stop looking. With transparent flakes that look like shimmering fairy wings, these two varieties of gypsum are made just for you. Selenite is clear and colorless, with sheets so thin and large they were literally, once upon a time, used as windowpanes. Satin spar, on the other hand, comes in long, pearly, rectangular columns that look like nothing so much as magic wands. Some of these grow so enormous they might have been conjured straight from a fairy world. And just as some believe that the veil between worlds can become thin and delicate in magical places, gypsum itself is thin and delicate. Easily flaked and bent, and soft enough to be scratched by fingernails, it’s so sensitive, it even breaks down in water. This is one mineral that should be treated with care, but if your dearest wish is to connect with realms of spirit and magic, you’re not going to do better than this. And, perhaps, if gypsum is appearing to you now, it’s a sign that other realms are hoping to connect with you as well.
