Like a kid with a superstar sibling, it’s often defined only by its comparison to gold. If gold is warm, then silver is cool. If gold is midday sun, silver is midnight and moonlight. If gold is first place, silver is forever second. And yet, second place or not, silver has long been the chosen favorite of the hip and cool. Think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or any beatnik wearing all-black with a silver chain. Whereas gold jewelry has often been associated with showing off, silver signals the kind of effortless chic that’s above such pandering. And, if you think about it, this actually makes perfect sense, because the truly cool among us don’t care if they’re in first place. They don’t care what anyone thinks of them at all. Paradoxically, it’s this lack of any need to impress that makes them so impressive. If this native element is showing up for you now, think of it as a message to chill. Stop trying so hard and caring so much, and you just might discover something even better than first place.

The Bottom Line

CHILL OUT!
“Stop trying so hard.”

One Or More Of These Messages Are For You

  • Trying too hard for the thing you want might be the very thing keeping you from it.
  • There are times for passion, warmth, and heat, and times for chilling out and letting go. This is one of the latter.
  • To improve your game, stop thinking about the outcome of your performance, and just focus on the next action you need to take.
  • Learn to detach from outcomes in general: Do things because you want to do them, not because you’re trying to gain something from them.
  • True friends are the kind you can relax with and don’t need to impress.
  • Don’t be desperate: Whatever it is you want so bad, find a way to be okay without it.
  • If you’re someone who always needs to come in first or be number one, quit it.
  • Cats are cool. Be a cat.
